La Gran Barrera de Coral, el organismo viviente más grande del planeta, hogar de un cuarto de las especies que habitan en nuestros océanos, está muriendo lentamente desde hace unos años.

Con un tamaño aproximado de 135.000 millas cuadradas, La Gran Barrera de Coral, es la ùnica estructura viva de la Tierra que puede ser vista desde el espacio.
En las últimas tres décadas, ha perdido la mitad de sus corales y el ritmo de devastación está acelerando. El cambio climático es una de las causas, pero la floreciente industria minera australiana también es responsable. La revista alemana Der Spiegel informó que "si continúa el mismo patrón, sucederá lo inimaginable: la Gran Barrera de Coral podría morir."

A pesar de toda la evidencia, la industria minera planea construir un sistema de puertos gigante al noreste de Australia para facilitar la exportación de carbón hacia el mundo, justo al lado de la Gran Barrera, en un zona llamada Abbot Point. Esto implicaría doblar el número de barcos que pasan por encima de este paraíso de arrecifes de coral, y destruir tres millones de metros cúbicos de vegetación del frágil fondo del mar. Además, si el puerto se construye, Australia podría explotar todo el carbón de este complejo minero, triplicando sus índices de contaminación actual, forzándonos rápidamente hacia un punto de no retorno.

Los inversionistas se están reuniendo ahora para decidir qué hacer y el Ministro de Ambiente de Australia podría aprobar o rechazar el proyecto durante las próximas dos semanas. Nuestras voces pueden ser la señal que necesitan para frenar este desastre, y ayudar a presionar al Primer Ministro Kevin Rudd, quien intenta cuidar su reputación nacional e internacional en la carrera a su reelección.
