Y ya que estamos, analizamos el origen de esta palabra de significado ambiguo...
"Entre los romanos, la palabra ambitio, derivada del verbo ambire ‘rodear’, ‘pretender’ (v. ambiente*), se usaba para denominar la actitud de los políticos que circulaban por la ciudad y rodeaban a sus partidarios para no perder su apoyo, buscando con todo empeño escalar nuevos peldaños en la carrera de los honores. Por esa razón, acabó adquiriendo la denotación de ‘lisonja’, ‘adulación’, pero también ‘ostentación’, ‘posición elevada’ y ‘ansia de poder y riquezas’.
Las palabras ambición y ambicioso llegaron al español en el siglo XV, derivadas de ambitio y ambitiosus, respectivamente".
